McCarn"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Harold Bernice McCarn was born in Randolph County, North Carolina on<br \/>February 14, 1923. His parents were Bernice McCarn and Nina Stout McCarn.<br \/>Harold\u2019s McCarn grandparents lived in Liberty, North Carolina, and his Stout grandparents (John Edward and Ada Rebecca Stout) lived in Coleridge, North Carolina.<br \/>Harold had two siblings \u2013 Jewel (4 years younger) and Charles (6 years younger).<\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1131 aligncenter\" title=\"bernice and nina mccarn (Dad&amp;mom)\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bernice-and-nina-mccarn-Dadmom-e1310336229975.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"319\" \/><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Harold\u2019s father, Bernice, was the school principal at Seagrove, North Carolina. After the great depression in 1929, times were very hard financially for everyone in the area.\u00a0 Bernice relocated the family to Elon, North Carolina for a better teaching job. Harold attended college at Elon College in Elon, North Carolina.<\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1176 aligncenter\" title=\"elon college\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/elon-college-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/elon-college-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/elon-college.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">In 1942\/43 Fairchild aircraft opened a new factory at nearby Burlington, North Caroline to build the Fairchild AT-21 advanced trainer. This brought much-needed jobs to the area.\u00a0 Possibly as a result of seeing this, the McCarn family applied for jobs at the Martin Aircraft factory in Baltimore, Maryland. The B-26 Marauder was manufactured at the plant.\u00a0 Bernice, Nina, and Harold all got jobs at the Martin factory. The family relocated to Baltimore sometime in 1943. Harold\u2019s sister, June, stays behind in North Carolina for her senior year of high school. She graduated in May or June of 1944 and then relocated to Baltimore. Both of Harold\u2019s parents would retire from Lockheed Martin (the successor to the Martin Company). Harold\u2019s mother, Nina, held a top-secret clearance and would not discuss her work with the family.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/P-8011-B-26F-1-Final-Assm-Plt-II-2-21-44.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5126\" src=\"http:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/P-8011-B-26F-1-Final-Assm-Plt-II-2-21-44.jpg\" alt=\"P-8011-B-26F-1 Final Assm Plt II 2-21-44\" width=\"1177\" height=\"922\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/P-8011-B-26F-1-Final-Assm-Plt-II-2-21-44.jpg 3791w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/P-8011-B-26F-1-Final-Assm-Plt-II-2-21-44-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/P-8011-B-26F-1-Final-Assm-Plt-II-2-21-44-1024x802.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1177px) 100vw, 1177px\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1160 aligncenter\" title=\"B26 Martin Factory pic 02\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/B26-Martin-Factory-pic-02-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"308\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Harold was inducted into the US Army in 1944. His enlistment date at Fort Bragg, North Carolina was June 24, 1944. He was sent to Camp Blanding in Starke, Florida to the Army\u2019s new Infantry Replacement Training Center.<\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1194 aligncenter\" title=\"camp blanding\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/camp-blanding-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"262\" \/><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">After completing training at Camp Blanding, Harold returned to Baltimore and married Helen Middlestadt in November 1944, immediately prior to departing for Europe. His unit fought in both the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle for the Bridge at Remagen. He was one of the first troops to enter the German heartland in March 1945 when he crossed the Ludendroff railway bridge at Remagen, Germany.<\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1139 aligncenter\" title=\"9th Armored Div\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/9th-Armored-Div.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\" \/><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">He was killed in action in\u00a0Aegidienberg, Bad Honnef, Germany\u00a0on March 16, 1945.<br \/>After\u00a0being reported missing the same day.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-5123\" src=\"http:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC04556.jpg\" alt=\"DSC04556\" width=\"359\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC04556.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC04556-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1169\" title=\"Harold Obituary\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harold-Obituary1-131x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"394\" \/><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The war in Europe would end 53 days later on May 8, 1945.
