Jenkins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Robert Lee Jenkins <br \/>(better known to his family and friends as Pete) <br \/>was born in<br \/>Sperryville, Virginia on January 19, 1925. <br \/>Son of Joseph and Myrtle Jenkins.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1122 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_85531-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_85531-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_85531-658x1024.jpg 658w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_85531.jpg 882w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He had two sisters, June and Mary (known as jack),<br \/>and one brother,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Clifton (who served in the Navy during WWII, see pic).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1109 aligncenter\" title=\"his is a picture of Pete's brother, Clifton Jenkins, who was in the Navy during WW2_150x150_p1\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/his-is-a-picture-of-Petes-brother-Clifton-Jenkins-who-was-in-the-Navy-during-WW2_150x150_p1-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/his-is-a-picture-of-Petes-brother-Clifton-Jenkins-who-was-in-the-Navy-during-WW2_150x150_p1-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/his-is-a-picture-of-Petes-brother-Clifton-Jenkins-who-was-in-the-Navy-during-WW2_150x150_p1.jpg 532w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After the death of her husband, Myrtle moved with her family to Winchester, Virginia where Pete attended the city schools.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1105 aligncenter\" title=\"robert l. jenkins_150x150_p1 (1)\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/robert-l.-jenkins_150x150_p1-1-e1309210288454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/robert-l.-jenkins_150x150_p1-1-e1309210288454.jpg 171w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/robert-l.-jenkins_150x150_p1-1-e1309210288454-90x300.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He entered the military on April 27, 1943, at the age of eighteen.\u00a0 He received his basic training at Camp Croft, located near Spartanburg, South Carolina.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1079 aligncenter\" title=\"Robert Lee (Pete) Jenkins....he was in the 29th infantry, 115th division during WWII\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Robert-Lee-Pete-Jenkins....he-was-in-the-29th-infantry-115th-division-during-WWII3-e1309106927554.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"471\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In early 1944, he was sent overseas and attached to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Company B of the\u00a0115<sup>th<\/sup> infantry, 29<sup style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 1; font-size: 10px; height: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; bottom: 1ex;\">th<\/sup> Infantry Div.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1075 \" title=\"115InfReg\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/115InfRegCOA.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"254\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1076 aligncenter\" title=\"logo 29th\" src=\"http:\/\/storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo-29th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"133\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Military records show that he was an expert infantryman. <br \/>Pete participated in and survived the Normandy D-Day invasion. Sadly, on July 3, 1944, Pete was killed in action around the area of Saint Lo, France.\u00a0 The cause of death is listed as a gunshot wound that went through his chest and out of his lower back.\u00a0 Records state that the personal effects found with Pete when he died were a combat medal, one wallet with snapshots, one fountain pen, one rosary, religious medals, souvenir coins, and two Army insignia.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/976AFB32-C9E5-444F-AEAD-B579AB880EEF-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/976AFB32-C9E5-444F-AEAD-B579AB880EEF-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/976AFB32-C9E5-444F-AEAD-B579AB880EEF-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/976AFB32-C9E5-444F-AEAD-B579AB880EEF-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/976AFB32-C9E5-444F-AEAD-B579AB880EEF-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/www.storiesbeyondthegraves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/976AFB32-C9E5-444F-AEAD-B579AB880EEF.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pete was originally buried at La Cambe Cemetery in La Cambe, France.
